Phospholipid and fatty acid composition in mitochondria from spinach (Spinacia oleracea) leaves and petioles. A comparative study.

Essentially chlorophyll-free mitochondria from photosynthetic (leaf) and non-photosynthetic tissue (petiole) were isolated from spinach (Spinacia oleracea). Leaf mitochondria were found to contain more phosphatidylcholine than phosphatidylethanolamine compared with petiole mitochondria. Galactolipids were found in small and equal amounts (5 mol of galactolipids/100 mol of galactolipids and phos...

Stoichiometry of carbon dioxide release and oxygen uptake during glycine oxidation in mitochondria isolated from spinach (Spinacia oleracea) leaves.

Mitochondria isolated from spinach (Spinacia oleracea) leaves oxidized glycine with a stoichiometry of CO2 evolution to O2 uptake of 2 : 1. In the absence of added substrate, the mitochondria exhibited an extremely low endogenous rate of O2 uptake.

Localization of carbamoylphosphate synthetase and aspartate carbamoyltransferase in chloroplasts.

The localization of carbamoylphosphate synthetase (CPSase) and aspartate carbamoyltransferase (ACTase), the first two enzymes of the pyrimidine biosynthetic pathway, in chloroplasts was investigated. In dark-grown radish (Raphanus sativus) seedlings, light induced a prominent increase in CPSase activity, but had little effect on ACTase activity. Both enzymes were found in chloroplasts isolated ...

Localization of ATP Sulfurylase and O-Acetylserine(thiol)lyase in Spinach Leaves.

The intracellular compartmentation of ATP sulfurylase and O-acetylserine(thiol)lyase in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) leaves has been investigated by isolation of organelles and fractionation of protoplasts. ATP sulfurylase is located predominantly in the chloroplasts, but is also present in the cytosol. No evidence was found for ATP sulfurylase activity in the mitochondria. Two forms of ATP s...

Photoreduction of sulfur dioxide by spinach leaves and isolated spinach chloroplasts.

Labeled sulfur dioxide was found to be extensively absorbed by spinach (Spinacea oleracea L.) leaves. Labeled sulfides detected in leaf blades following fumigations with sulfur dioxide in light indicated that photoreduction of sulfur dioxide had occurred. Measurable proportions of this labeled sulfur was localized within the chloroplast fraction. Suspensions of isolated chloroplasts supplied wi...
